Landscaping Project Case Study: Ashford, Co Wicklow

Landscaping Project Case Study: Ashford, Co Wicklow

Recently, our team completed a landscaping project around a newly built house. This fully detached property is constructed in the countryside, encircled by farmland and wild meadows. Therefore, the challenge was to design an inviting, orderly outdoor space that, instead of clashing with the surrounding countryside, blended and complemented the vivid panoramic views surrounding the property.

Paving and Decorative Stone

To achieve this fusion with nature, we needed to select a stone that integrates into the natural landscape while complementing the property's modern design. To this end, we selected silver-grey granite slabs for the paving.

The slabs' natural, grey hue merges with the limestone rock native to Wicklow. At the same time, the subtlety of the silver shading complements the property's strong angular design.

Our landscapers used loose golden flint chippings for the driveway. The multi-shades of yellow carefully contrasted with the singular grey shade of the paving slabs. Also the multi-yellow shades of the pebbles mirrored the various natural colours found in the surrounding landscape. This splash of colour added some dramatic heft to the property.

The building's angular design informed the driveway and paving layout. Forgoing excessive curves, we installed paving in strong cubic shapes, which gave the space a sense of balance and order.

Plants And Flowers

Early on in the project, it was decided that all the plants and flowers used would strive for an autumnal palette, with pops of natural colours that could be found in the surrounding landscape.

Naturally, all shrubbery was chosen for its vividly green foliage. Emphasis was placed on planting native flowers with blooms that sprinkled the property with pops of red and purple.

Finally, instead of fighting nature, biodiversity was embraced by allowing several native Irish weeds to grow in the boxed-off planting zones. Native Irish ferns were allowed to spring up — further connecting the property with the surrounding landscape.
